Healthy Dog food and Treats?

I have a Female, 6 month old, 60lb Mountain Mutt. (German Shepherd, Akita, Bull mastiff, Pit bull, Coyote)

She goes through a 5 pound bag of dog food in about 4 days. I’ve been feeding her Purina One Lamb and Rice Formula.

I would like to find out what kinds of foods have the most packed Protein, Vitamins, Minerals, ect…

I would also like to know of some human foods that are good to mix in with her dry and wet dog food. (egg, cottage cheese, fish oil, ect.)

I would also appreciate a list of healthy, natural dog treats, bones from butchery’s, ect.. that are good for puppy’s.

I would appreciate food that are natural and organic, i only want the best for my baby girl who is growing very very fast, i want her to be as happy healthy and strong as humanly (dog-ily) possible.

Please be as detailed as possible, i would also appreciate a list of foods to stay away from.

Organic dog food question, my dog doesn't like it?

I got my Yorkie/Shih Tzu about 10 months ago from a shelter, he was about 1.5 years old when I got him and he had been in that shelter, then adopted, and then returned to the shelter again.

No idea why he was returned to the shleter, because he is the best dog. Totally house broken, trained to sit, give paw and lay down, completely well behaved, loves to fetch a ball and brings it right back every time…couldn’t ask for anything better, except for his eating!!

When I got him the shelter had been feeding him Iams, so I kept feeding him that for a couple of weeks, until I learned how crappy all the big name dog foods are. I then switched to Hollistic brand food, which he didn’t seem to like very much, so after a while with that I swithced him to Innova.

I have pretty much stuck with the Innova for the last 8 months or so, but he has never really liked it, and has been very picky about food since I’ve gotten him. At first I mixed wet and dry food, he would mostly pick out the dry and eat only the wet. Then I started just giving him the dry with some water, he never really liked that and would only eventually eat it after 2 days of not eating.

Then it got to the point where I would just give him a bowl of wet food (Innova) and he would gobble it right down. This worked well for a while and now he won’t touch that either.

He’s not annorexic, he will eat treats all day long if I would give them to him, which I don’t, or eat whatever I am eating, no matter what it is, which I generally don’t give him, but sometimes give him some bites. He’s been to the vet and there is nothing wrong with him.

It is so frustrating that he won’t eat, especially when this is what he used to eat, I mean he was picky, but once I started giving him just the wet food, he would eat it right down. Now he is picky about that too. It doesn’t help that my wife snekas behind my back and hand feeds him either.

The only switch I have made is that every now and then I would give him some Evo wet food, but he would always eat the regular Innova the next time after the Evo.

But now he won’t eat any of the Innova at all, wet or dry.

I left him at my sister’s the other day and she feeds her dogs Beneful wet and dry food….she won’t listen to me about what crap they are.

Anyway she said he gobbled it right up. I took some home with me, just to experiment, and the next meal he gobbled the Beneful right up.

I DO NOT want to feed him that crappy food, but he loves and eats it no problem, which makes my life easier, because I don’t have the time to sit and deal with him being picky in the morning before work.

Why does it seem that dogs like the crappy food more than the good food? And why did my dog stop eating his food, and what can I do to get him to start again?

Thanks.

I have tried a bunch of different brands of organic foods. We first used Wellness, then Hollistic, then California Natural, then Innova, also have tried Eagle Pack, and some others that I saw in the store. The pet store by me only sells organic foods, she won’t sell any big brand food.

He has never been crazy about any of them really. So I figured I’d stick with Innova since it seems to be one of the top rated. He gets Evo also for the raw diet, at first he would eat that right up, but has become picky about that too.

I have never tried Blue Buffalo, I may give that a shot, but not sure if the store sells it here.

I think he is just a picky dog, I think I will just have to be tough and give him the food and pick it up after 15 minutes and that’s it.

He throw’s up when he doesn’t eat for 12 hours, so I have been trying to avoid that. Sometimes when I come home, he has thrown up, but it’s just the stomach acid or green bile or whatever it is.

How to train an adopted dog without treats?

I adopted a year old lab/pit mix from a co-worker who couldn’t keep her anymore. Turns out they didn’t train her to walk on a leash, not to jump up on people, etc. I’ve been taking her on long walks twice a day. With my first dog, I used lots of treats as rewards for good behavior, which obviously helped, but my new dog has a very sensitive digestive system and her last owners instructed me NOT to give her anything other than her organic food.

Basically, I’d love any suggestions as to how to teach her to walk well on a leash without pulling and to listen to commands without the use of treats. Or, if you know of any treats that are good for dogs with a verrry sensitive digestive system that have worked for you.

Thanks guys!

Making wheat, corn and soy free dog treats?

Does anyone know any recipies that are wheat, corn and soy free? Or know where I can find some on line???

I make peanut butter balls and I freeze Swanson’s Organic Chicken Broth and Beef Broth for frozen treats, but I would really like to make some healthy biscuits.
Yes, my dog has Atopic Dermatitis from food allergies. That’s why the no wheat, corn or soy. Buy corn and wheat are terrible for the coat anyway.

I don’t humanize my dog, I do give her biscuits…but they’re rather expensive, so I thought I would try and make them cheaper.

My dog does get raw meat, fresh fruits and veggies. They’re part of her every day diet.

I don’t wanna eat the same things everyday…so why should my dog.

The ingredients are:
Organic Whole Wheat Flour, Fine Ground Oat Flour, Blackstrap Mollasses, Canola Oil [preserved with Vitamin C , Rosemary and Sage], Peanut Butter.

I know that they contain no meat or vegetables, but my dogs are all on a raw diet and get plenty of fresh fruits, veggies and meat daily, and these are just for reward purposes. Innova EVO treats are now selling for .99 and we go through a bag a week. I think it’s rediculous. I could bake my own but they always seem to crumble before I can even get one in to my dogs’ mouths.

So do you think they’re okay? Should I buy more?
I know I could give them veggies as treats, but it’s so much easier to just reach in a box and grab a treat. They are made in the USA.
I have 7 dogs. They each get about 3 or 4 treats a day, and there are only about 30 or so in a bag. They don’t last long.
Lol, no, it’s not Newmans Own. The brand is "treat! dog". :S
Good idea, except only two of my dogs eat carrots. One eats them if I coat them in peanut butter, the other ones just lick the peanut butter off and leave the carrots for the other dogs to eat.

We make organic all natural wheat, corn, and soy Free Dog treats. We are wondering what a good name would be for our business we are starting.

Looking for something that is not all ready used and something that is catchy for our bakery.

We also will be including other things besides dog treats like dog clothes, collars, toys etc … however the organic treats are the main business.

I have just been worried sick about the pet food recall. It seems like nothing and no brand is safe. After they recalled the jerky treats today (which my miniature dachshund loved!), my husband and I decided we had to do something. Let me first say that my dog, Laci, is finicky with a capital F! I have tried several dry and canned foods and Little Cesar’s is all she will eat. I did alot of research on the Internet today to try to find a good dog food that was made from natural ingredients and was pleased with what I read about Solid Gold. We went to Pet Supplies Plus tonight and bought some Solid Gold "Just a Wee Bit" bison and lamb dry food. You would not believe how fast Laci gobbled it down! She absolutely loves it! I am tickled to death that she will eat this. I definitely recommend it!

I’ve finally found a dog food that doesn’t give her stomach troubles (Orijen Regional Red). It’s very expensive but it’s made with more quality ingredients than most of the foods I eat! She’s a 25 lb terrier mix, with lots of energy. I try to give her treats with some carbs because I’ve read that giving a high protein food to a small dog like her is like feeding her rocket fuel. It’s really hard to find quality food with carbs.

I’ve tried lots of different organic all natural treats for her. She LOVES liver, especially the rawhide sticks that are wrapped in it. I found lots of treats she enjoys (she’s very food-motivated and will eat most anything) most recently, Charlee Bear treats made with wheat flour and chicken liver, they give her the runs. Rawhides do it too. She’s such a good dog, I work 9-5, and I live alone.. It’s just me and her. I like to give her a treat when I come home if she’s been a good dog while I’m away, but it seems to be counter-productive as she has bowel problems after the treats.

I know dogs don’t "need" treats, especially one with her stomach problems, but she really likes them, and I like rewarding her for not being destructive and minding her house-training. Any ideas for a snack for dogs with sensitive tummies?
she won’t eat ice even when it’s 100 degrees outside, and peanut butter gives her runs too. so do baby carrots.

I know this is sort of a random one, but about a year ago we bought these organic bubblegum flavored dog biscuits at a feed store and our dogs LOVED them, but now they don’t carry them any more. Is there a website or a store where I could buy them? I also asked about them at PetSmart and PetCo, but neither of them carried them.
Thanks in advance for any help. :)

(Links to sites would be great)
    It’s not real bubblegum!!
It’s only a sweet flavor, and it does not contain a sweet subsitute. We our very concerned about what goes in our dog’s bodies and we even asked our vet if they’re okay and they said yes.

Thank you to the people who answered my question.

    Hello,
I took my dogs to the vets today.I feed high quality/organic dog food.Anyhow one of my dogs was having minor allergies and the vet said it was because my dog was probably allergic to colors.I have to admite I once in awhile give them the treats that have colors instead of holistic treats. Is this true and has anyone else hear it?Thankyou.
The vet says breeds like English Bulldogs are especially sensitive to them.Like colors found in foods such as Beneful.Example:Blue 2,Red 40….

Does anyone give their dog herbal tea?

I’m considering giving my dog some herbal tea to help calm/relax her. I tend to agree with holistic treatments, and I think they would work for my dog as well. The tea contains no caffeine or artificial anything, and the ingredients (like chamomile and lavender) are also in her dog treats, so they should be safe for dogs. I only use organic herbal tea, so the ingredients are very few. Has anyone ever tried this, or know of any reasons why I shouldn’t try it?

The dog is a small Yorkie.
    Hypnosis, really?
